music

I sing in and play acoustic guitar in a band called Sweet Surrender.  We sing a lot of other people's songs, but have worked up a few of our own as well.  Here they are:

(This song originally debuted on episode #276 of the 7 Minute Security podcast)

Backstory

A few years ago a worked on an incident response where a user got phished with a promise of a free burrito from Chipotle but instead got a free order of CryptoLocker! And rather than tell IT or sound the alarms, the user just left for the day! The next day they came back and the company was digitally on fire, and they played ignorant to what was going on.  I found the user's handling of the situation humorous (read: not the CryptoLocker infection itself!), so I was inspired to write a song about it.

LYRICS

You said you wouldn't do it
You said you wouldn't click that link
But you totally did
It’s clear you didn’t stop and think
How the promise of a free burrito would be all that it took
To open up our networks to virtual crooks

You said you would be careful
Read every email with a fine-toothed comb
But you totally didn’t
And now they’re stringing up our CTO
Oh I pray we’ve got good backups but you know we probably don’t
I was going to take tomorrow off but now I probably won’t because we’re all…

CryptoLocker’d thanks to you, thanks to you
We're running around like circus clowns
Screaming what are we going to do
Yeah we’re all CryptoLocker’d thanks to you, thanks to you

We’re gonna make you pay for this
Because you cursed us with a certain doom
Gonna take your computer
And then replace it with a Microsoft Zune
Yeah the IT team is crying while they’re facing their worst fears
And you can pick the soundtrack to go with their tears

Your coworkers are furious
Cursing your name with a red-hot hate
But they’ll deal with you later
When all our data get restored from tape
Maybe then you’ll be more careful with the hyperlinks you click
And everyone who works here will not think you’re such a jerk because we’re all...

CryptoLocker’d thanks to you, thanks to you
We're running around like circus clowns
Screaming what are we going to do
Yeah we’re all CryptoLocker’d thanks to you, thanks to you

Now we’re wishing that we’d checked - our backup job integrity
Because it hasn’t finished once - since June of ‘93!

CryptoLocker’d thanks to you, thanks to you
We're running around like circus clowns
Screaming what are we going to do
Yeah we’re all CryptoLocker’d thanks to you, thanks to you

Our resources are tapped
Our resources are straining
Next time don’t call in sick
Or find some way to miss
Security awareness training
Now we’re all totally screwed thanks to you

It's that moment of the show, where everybody wants to know
Will I even like this band? But hopefully you understand...this is simply a

Sound check, to check our sound
Only takes a minute won't take too long
I think it's only fair ...that we begin with a

Sound check, and not a real song
Even though we welcome you to sing along
So keep your butts right in your chairs
This will only take a sec
To finish our sound check

Once the mix is finally set, there's no need for you to fret
When we settle in our places, acoustically we'll melt your faces...after we do a..

Sound check, to check our sound
Only takes a minute won't take too long
I think that it's implied that this is only a

Sound check, just a little patter
Even if you wanna leave it doesn't matter
The doors are locked from the outside
This will only take a sec
To finish our sound check

Oooo-oooo now please wish us good luck
Oooo-oooo we do not want to suck
Oooo-oooo it's time to get to it
We do a sound check...so that we don't sound like...bad
This was our sound check

This is our first original tune called Miss You.

Backstory

A little backstory/history: Brian's cousin Shawn (a Lino Lakes , MN police officer) died in the line of duty in 2005. The COPS (Concerns of Police Survivors) group surrounded his family with support - they are a fantastic organization! Over the last few years, Sweet Surrender has been involved with COPS by singing at the yearly Blue Light Ceremony at the State Capitol. We started writing Miss You last fall as a general grief song, but it more naturally became a song specifically for those grieving the loss of a loved one in the line of service. So we sang Miss You at the ceremony last October (2014).

Lyrics:

You were the other side of me
A solid place where I could always stand
A shoulder I could lean on, a soft place I could fall
Without you I'm so small

Every night you promised to protect
The people of our city while we slept
We waved you off to work, and you kissed us goodbye
Selfless with your life

Oh, what are we going to do?
Oh, we miss you

Danger was a part of what you did
You always met it head on, never hid
You gave your best to us and all of those you served
Rest now well-deserved

Oh, what are we going to do?
Oh, we miss you

If God allows our hearts to feel this grief
He will send his angels with relief
So send them now

What are we going to do?
We miss you
We thank you
